Mini Swimmers was founded by Elaine in 2011 after having her children Poppy and Alfie. She has been able to combine her love of swimming with her background in business and genuinely feels she has the best job in the world!
What’s your favourite thing about teaching?
I love everything about teaching swimming – for me it’s about the journey from the little babies splashing, kicking and splodging in, building their confidence and enjoyment of the water; to the toddlers swimming on a woggle on their own for the first time; to the pre-schoolers swimming their first strokes and swimming independently. The job satisfaction is immense – I often come back after a teaching session with aching jaws from smiling so much!
Do you remember learning to swim?
My Mum has always been nervous in the water, and didn’t want to pass on her fears, so took my sister and I to lessons from an early age. I remember my first swimming teacher, Brian Wilgos, at Coppice Valley swimming pool in Harrogate. He was an incredible teacher and later coach and was the reason I developed a passion for swimming and went on to represent Harrogate at the Yorkshire Championships. My favourite stroke was front crawl (although I prefer a more leisurely breaststroke these days!).
What do you get up to when you’re not in the pool?
I’m pretty busy with Mini Swimmers and running around after my family, however I love walking our dogs Freddie and Ralph and catching up with friends.
Favourite post swimming snack?
I’m always hungry after teaching or swimming, so it has to be something sweet.
Favourite song in the pool?
3 little men in a flying saucer usually guarantees even the most tentative miniswimmer to giggle!
Favourite swimming stroke?
My favourite stroke was front crawl when I was younger, although I prefer a more leisurely backstroke these days!
STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Teaching (July 2012)

Over 100 hours training in both the classroom and pool, plus over too many hours to count teaching experience!
Where’s your favourite place to visit in the local area?
I love being outdoors, so a walk in the dales with a stop for lunch and cake always hits the spot.
What was the last concert you went to?
Luigi’s in York
Dogs or cats?
I’ve got both, so can’t be disloyal and choose.
If you could have one superpower what would it be?
To see the future
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A sweet shop owner (I think I would have consumed the profits however!)
